The Sigma 500mm f/4 DG HSM OS Sports lens is the first prime telephoto DSLR lens in Sigma's critically acclaimed Sports line. Designed for professional photographers, the 500mm f/4 Sports is a rugged dust and splash proof lens created to weather the harsh conditions that many photographers find themselves in when shooting outdoors. Exceptional image quality is achieved through rigorous optical design testing while autofocus and quality is maintained when paired with the Sigma TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x teleconverter. An advanced Optical Stabilizer (OS) touts a two mode switch, for handheld photography, for panning and tracking vertically and horizontally. The new Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) touts 1.3x the torque of previous models for fast and snappy focusing. USB Lens Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro allow for lens customization including personalized focus limiters, 4 zone micro focus tuning, OS preview behavior, AF performance enhancement. Transverse chromatic aberration is greatly controlled through optical design and 500mm f/4 Art allows for rear filters to be used.
DG for Digital
Sigma's DG lenses are specifically designed to deliver the ultimate level of performance on full frame digital SLRs. Sigma DGs also maximize the abilities of 35mm SLR cameras and APS-C size DSLRs. Thanks to a complete and comprehensive approach to the correction of chromatic aberrations, you will experience incredible image clarity and smoothness. Specific attention was paid to helping eliminate color fringing often caused by lateral chromatic aberration, a problem that is magnified at high resolution in digital photography. DG lenses provide exceptionally high contrast along with subtle gradations in tone and color. Super Multi-Layer Coating, along with Sigma's optimized optical design work to reduce reflections between the image sensor and the lens surfaces. The large image circles of DG lenses mean there will always be enough peripheral illumination to avoid vignetting.
Quiet and Fast Autofocusing
HSM lenses employ a motor powered by ultrasonic waves that produce a quiet, yet high-speed AutoFocus. You can enjoy high performance with low noise in a variety of shooting situations.
Optical Stabilization
The Optical Stabilizer (OS) function features an acceleration sensor to ensure even higher precision. Two OS modes are available: Mode 1 for general photography and Mode 2 for motor sports and other applications requiring panning. In Mode 2, the acceleration sensor teams up with the Intelligent OS and its updated stabilization algorithm to deliver effective stabilization while you move the camera horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—regardless of the position of the lens. This feature helps ensure effective panning and outstanding capture of moving subjects.
Top-Level Optical Performance
The lens incorporates two FLD and one SLD glass elements, while the optimized power distribution helps minimize spherical aberration and axial chromatic aberration. The optical system also effectively minimizes transverse chromatic aberration, which can affect the edges of the shots taken in the telephoto range. In addition, image quality remains exceptional when the lens is used with a SIGMA Tele Converter (sold separately).
Two Full-Time Manual Modes Switchable
In addition to AF/MF, MO (Manual Override) is incorporated as one of the options of the focus mode switch. By setting it to the MO position, it switches to manual focus by rotating the focus ring even during continuous AF. With AF position, standard full-time manual focus is available. Using the optional SIGMA USB DOCK, it is possible to adjust the MO position’s sensitivity to switch to manual focus.
