Difference Between Night Vision and Thermal Imaging

Wondering what the difference is and which one fits your needs? Although they are often thought to be the same thing, they are quite different. Night vision relies on a small amount of ambient light (such as from the moon and stars) to operate. If there is no source of light available, you will not be able to see any better than you would with the naked eye. To remedy this, most modern night vision equipment comes with or can be equipped with an IR illuminator.

Thermal imaging, on the other hand, detects thermal energy (heat) and, therefore, does not need a source of illumination. A thermal imager can see small differences in heat and represent this typically as a black and white image on a screen. Recognizing exactly what the image is from a distance, however, can be challenging.

Military and police often prefer thermal imaging as it can see through smoke, fog, leaves and debris and allows them to go undetected from potential threats. Hunters tend to prefer night vision as it allows them to easily recognize and identify the type of animals even at long distances.
