Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens

Canon's EF-S 17–55mm f/2.8 IS USM is an advanced zoom lens, specifically engineered to deliver super fast speeds in a EF-S zoom. Its new and large aperture of f/2.8 creates incredibly shallow depth of field that illicits a pleasing background blur, drawing attention and creating detail in the subject. The lens construction includes UD and aspherical elements, which deliver impressive image quality throughout the entire zoom range. It also features Canon's optical Image Stabilizer technology, providing up to 3-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake at slow shutter speeds. This means you can effectively capturing stunning, high quality images even in very challenging lighting situations. Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors.

ULTRA SONIC MOTOR (USM)

Canon's USM lenses employ a motor powered by ultrasonic waves that produce a quiet, yet high-speed AutoFocus. You can enjoy high performance with low noise in a variety of shooting situations.

ULTRA LOW DISPERSION GLASS (UD)

Canon's Low Dispersion technology is engineered to reduce chromatic aberrations, eliminating the tendency of light of different colors to focus to different points at the image plane. This means your images will come out crisp and clear, with less of a chance of defracting light into an unwanted rainbow of colors. Take shots exactly like you want, without any flare-up or blurring.

ASPHERICAL DESIGN

Canon's aspherical lens design creates a more complex surface profile. This helps to greatly reduce spherical and other optical aberrations. The design further ensures consistent imaging performance throughout the entire focal range, while delivering incredible sharpness up to the periphery of the image.

MANUAL FOCUS

Manual focusing means you have all the control at the end of your fingers. Canon lenses feature a specially designed ergonomic construction that is noticeable at first touch. The large rotation angle of this lens guarantees precise focusing. The mechanism moves super smoothly and without extra play, furthering the intuitive interaction along the focal plane.

ADVANCED APERTURE DESIGN

The circular aperture produces a natural background blur.  With Canon lenses you can create stunning Bokeh effects, thanks to the finely tuned features and advanced optical design. By keeping the background intentionally blurred, additional focus is created on the subject of an image. The uniquely engineered diaphragm blades of this lens, along with the virtually circular aperture, deliver stunning renditions of highlights the back and foreground.

ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATING

The Canon anti-reflective coating is an optical design feature which ensures superior clarity and image brilliance, even in poor or unfavorable lighting conditions. Canon applies the anti-reflective coating through a special process, layering the lens surface in order to substantially reduce unwanted flare or ghosting. This process helps to ensure incredibly rich image contrast and true color fidelity. Canon L Series lenses feature a fluorine coating on the front and rear surfaces. This coating helps to greatly reduce smears, smudges or fingerprints ensuring that you will always take impeccable images.

OPTICAL IMAGE STABILIZATION (IS)

Lens features Optical Stabilization technology, a feature that employs an innate, built-in mechanism in order to compensate for camera shake. By eliminating natural shakes and sways with camera movement your images will come out crisp and clean every time.

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens SKU: 1242B002

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review for EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM I use this lens for over 12 years. Great all around fast lens. I have no dust issue due to quality UV filter is always on the filter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from WORKS FOR ME! So...I have had a Canon 7D2 for several years that I use all the time with a 100-400ii lens and a 35isf2. I also have a 5D4. I use the 7D2 mostly for wildlife (birds mostly). I really don't like taking two cameras and lots of lenses when I am traveling or out and about. Generally if I'm on a wildlife mission it is with the 7D2, 100-400, and the 35. If I am doing a landscape, people project it is mostly the 5D4. I have several general purpose L lens that I have used and they are fantastic on the 5D4, but I have never been satisfied with the general purpose L's on the 7D2. I always wanted to try the 17-55 as a companion to the 100-400 on some travels, but one, it was expensive for what you get and two, seems like a waste of money with the other L's that I have. Anyway, to make a short story long, canon had a great refurb sale this year (too good to pass up) so I bought the 17-55 refurbished (many of my other lens and cameras are canon refurbished too and they have been excellent). With canons return policy and one year warranty you really can't go wrong. It arrived like all canon refurbs do. In a generic canon box, without the lens box, but looking brand new, with the new style lens cap. Examined it in great detail and saw not a single flaw. Not a spec of dust in the glass. The zoom was tight and I could immediately get a feel for the slight zoom barrel retention mechanism that many people say stops working correctly after a while allow for lens creep. Then put it on my 7D2 and started taking my usual pictures that help me evaluate a lens. I made a -2 wide adjustment and then a +3 tele adjustment after about a couple hundred pics and it seemed to get it where I wanted it. There seems to be a bit of inconsistency at f2.8 (similar too but not as bad as the canon 50mm 1.4), but the images seem reasonably sharp and had nice color and contrast. IS works nicely and is quiet. But more importantly I just like the feel and look of the image on this camera as opposed to the 16-35L or the 24-70L. I've had it for a week now and I've had time to learn its quirks (okay, maybe its my quirks) and I really like it with the 7D2. Landscape images at F8 are quite nice. People images at f2.8 can be quite nice, but you do get misses and when it misses, it misses! No doubt when I venture out on a primary wildlife outing I will take the 17-55 as my companion lens to my 100-400ii. Giving it 4 stars as it looks great, works good, and was priced very well. Knocked off a star for the occasional inconsistent focus. One week does not give me enough time to make judgements on zoom creep, the accrual of lens dust, durability, etc. but for what I see and hold I am glad I made the purchase. Yeah, it is an old model, but it just works on a crop camera. Or at least I should say works for me! I

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I was looking for. Should be an " L " series lens. Don't know why so many people complain about the dust issue, that's why lens filters are made to protect the lenses. Strange that I have not had any issues with dust.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Lens If you have a crop camera then you will love this lens and especially love how sharp your pics will be! I've read other comments saying it performs like an L-series in terms of image quality and I totally agree....and it doesn't cost as much as an L-series lens!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 17-55 IS fantastic lens If u plan on keeping an APS-C Sensor body this is the best all-purpose lens you can get. Great optics and IS ensures most of your shots will end up very crisp and sharp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from would recommend when you want to upgrade your lens This lens differently is way better than my starter lens that I first started with. What I like most about this lens that you dont loss less light when you zoom out with the lens rather still get the same amount of light when zoomed in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for overhead food photography I wanted an ultra sharp lens with a fairly wide angle for food photography and this does the job. A Not as sharp as the EFS-35mm I also bought but pretty close. The lens is beautifully built, fairly heavy (which I like actually) due to the thick heavy lens glass. Some people complain this lens may malfunction due to dust. For me this is not an issue since it will be used indoors mostly. If I am travelling I will take my L lens. But you will never get 2.8 zoom at this price. Buy it.
