The lens is outfitted with two high-refraction lens elements and new Gaussian optics. The lens speed of f/1.4 is perfect for available light shooting. As a bonus, this lens is the only lens in the EF system to offer an extra small Micro Ultra Sonic Motor while providing a full time manual focusing option.

The lens special ultrasonic motor delivers outstanding results it enables fast smooth autofocus action and full time manual focus override.

Compatibility

Rated 2 out of 5 by BrianAZ from Wonderful images...when it works I’ve had this lens for several years, and I have a serious love/hate relationship with it. Focus is so incredibly inconsistent. The only time I can get the majority of my images in focus is by using live view and magnify the image in the screen. Even then it’s not 100%. I recently spent several days trying to microfocus adjust this lens and nothing I tried seemed to work. It didn’t matter the aperture I used. If I made minor adjustments to fix backfocus the lens would shift to a horrible front focus. Manual focus was no better. That being said, it does provide images close in quality to what my L glass produces. I just wish I could trust it enough to use it. I just can’t justify having to use live view 100% of the time with this lens.
