Exmor CMOS Sensor

The Alpha 7S III features a newly developed 12.1-megapixel Full-frame Backside-illuminated (BSI) Exmor R CMOS sensor that delivers sensitivity, speed, and superior images and movies. It takes full advantage of the large pixels and BSI copper wiring structure to more than double the sensitivity and readout speed2. In addition, this new Exmor R sensor features Sony’s acclaimed fast hybrid autofocus with 759 phase-detection AF points and 92 percent coverage. The α7S III can record 10-bit 4:2:2 video internally when using Long GOP or All Intra compression, making it possible to grade for fuller, more natural gradations while generally providing greater editing freedom. The maximum frame rate when recording full-frame 4K is 120p5.

Efficient MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 Coding

In addition to Sony’s common XAVC S (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) codec found on current models, the α7S III adds XAVC HS format recording21 using the MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec for approximately twice the efficiency of XAVC S.

16bits RAW Output for Movie

Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens

The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens represents another step forward in photographic technology. This G Master 35mm, full frame, standard zoom lens is a great choice for professional photographers who require the best optical performance possible. In order to further improve image quality, the lens features Sony’s Nano anti-reflective coating that reduces the amount of light that’s reflected by the lens and helps reduce lens flare and image ghosting. This lens also has a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture that allows you to more easily maintain exposure settings while changing the zoom range.

Shooting in low-light situations is always challenging, but the lens’ constant f/2.8 maximum aperture ensures that you’ll get great looking pictures in any light and at any zoom range. 50 Line Pairs/mm Resolving Power

It is not easy to achieve spatial frequency of 50 lines pairs per millimeter at a lens's widest aperture, but that is Sony's baseline for G Master design. Unprecedented resolution and other demanding design parameters yield outstanding reproduction of the most detailed subjects and scenes with superior contrast throughout every frame.

Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM)

High-resolution camera bodies demand absolute focus precision. The Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM) focus system is more than up to the task for both stills and movies. DDSSM has the capability to position the large, heavy optical assemblies required by large-aperture lenses with pinpoint precision, offering advantages for manual focus as well as autofocus. Manual focus response is also natural and intuitive.
