Heir to the revolutionary innovations of the acclaimed Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art — the industry’s first F1.8 zoom — the Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art offers, thirteen years later, superior optical performance. It does so with a wider focal range and significantly lighter weight, features that increase the versatility of this large-aperture standard zoom.
In addition to fast and silent autofocus powered by the HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), this lens features an internal zoom mechanism and offers minimal focus breathing, ensuring excellent performance for both photo and video use.
Sigma, which once amazed the world with the first F1.8 zoom, is once again setting a new milestone in the history of high-brightness lenses with this new offering for APS-C mirrorless cameras.
A large-aperture standard zoom with the quality of a prime lens
The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art maintains a constant F1.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range, making it ideal for low-light scenes — such as indoor or nighttime shooting — and for achieving a pronounced bokeh effect.
Outstanding Optical Performance
Thanks to its advanced optical design, which includes high-precision aspherical elements, this lens delivers exceptional resolution even when shooting wide open at F1.8. Effective correction of axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma ensures subtle textures and fine details are captured with stunning sharpness.
Its focal range is wider than that of the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art, covering an equivalent of 25.5–60mm in full-frame format (approximately 27.2–64mm for the Canon RF version). This allows for everything from wide-angle shots to telephoto-style portraits without changing lenses.
Sigma’s advanced simulation technology and Super Multi-Layer Coating effectively minimize flare and ghosting, delivering images rich in contrast in any situation.
Compact and Durable
Weighing over 30% less than the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art and featuring a 67mm filter diameter (one size smaller than its predecessor), this large-aperture zoom impresses with its portability. Paired with a compact APS-C body, it's ideal for travel, daily photography, and video production where mobility is key.
In addition to a dust- and splash-resistant structure (note: it is not waterproof, so direct exposure to water should be avoided), the front element features a special coating that repels water and oil, allowing for safe operation in demanding environments.
Fast AF with HLA Motor
The HLA motor delivers fast, precise, and silent autofocus. This smoothness and stability are ideal not only for photography but especially for video — including gimbal work or vlogging.
Minimal Focus Breathing
Focus breathing has been minimized to reduce changes in the angle of view when adjusting focus, enabling smooth and natural transitions during video recording.
Multi-Function Aperture Ring
The lens includes an aperture ring that offers intuitive control over aperture settings. The click mechanism can be disengaged for silent adjustments during recording, and the ring can also be locked to prevent accidental changes.
The Canon RF version includes a control ring instead of an aperture ring, with no click or lock functionality.
