The Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary gives Nikon Z mirrorless photographers an expansive 16 mm to 300 mm focal range in one portable lens. Its 18.8x zoom ratio moves from wide-angle compositions to distant subjects without requiring a lens change. APS-C sensor coverage makes the range useful for landscapes, interiors, portraits, wildlife, sports, aviation, and travel. At 70 mm, a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 also adds detailed close-up capability.
Fast Focus and Optical Stabilization
A high-response linear actuator drives the focusing group directly for fast, accurate autofocus that can keep pace with moving subjects. The inner focus design adjusts internal elements without changing barrel length during focusing. Sigma also uses its OS2 optical stabilization algorithm to provide 6 stops of stabilization at the 16 mm wide end and 4.5 stops at the 300 mm telephoto end, based on CIPA testing with an APS-C camera. This helps reduce the effect of camera shake during handheld shooting.
Optical Design for a Broad Zoom Range
The optical construction uses 20 elements in 14 groups, including 1 FLD element, 4 SLD elements, and 4 aspherical elements. Sigma engineered the lens to minimize flare and ghosting, while its Super Multi Layer Coating helps reduce internal reflections. Focus breathing is also suppressed to help maintain more consistent framing when focus changes, supporting both still photography and video workflows.
Portable Construction for Field Use
The Nikon Z mount version measures 73.8 mm in diameter by 125.4 mm in length and weighs 630 grams. A zoom lock switch secures the lens at the wide end during transport. The dust- and splash-resistant structure adds sealing around key areas, while the front element has a water- and oil-repellent coating for easier maintenance. A 67mm filter thread provides a common size for adding compatible filters.
