The Sony FX3 has become popular with solo filmmakers, wedding videographers, documentary shooters and small production teams alike. Its compact body, excellent low-light performance, professional audio support and dependable 4K recording have made it one of Sony's most popular Cinema Line cameras. 






Sony FX5 retains the compact Cinema Line concept but adds a number of meaningful upgrades. These include a 5K stacked sensor, full-frame Open Gate recording, internal X-OCN RAW, an extra base ISO, Dual Gain Shooting and a redesigned body powered by a new battery. 


So, here are the six differences that are most likely to matter in real-world production, rather than comparing every spec. 

The FX5 Has a New 5K Stacked Sensor

The biggest technical change is the sensor. 

The Sony FX5 uses a new 16.6-megapixel full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and the newer BIONZ XR2 processor. For video, the FX3 employs a conventional backside-illuminated Exmor R sensor with around 10.3 effective megapixels. 

The term “stacked” refers to the sensor’s internal construction. A stacked sensor can read image data out faster, which allows the camera to support higher resolutions and frame rates, while also reducing the types of motion distortion commonly seen with slower sensor readout. 

The FX5 is capable of recording in 5K resolution, up from the FX3’s maximum of 4K recording resolution. The extra image information can also give you more flexibility to crop or reframe the image, digitally stabilize it, or create multiple versions of the same shot. 

The FX5 also incorporates Sony’s BIONZ XR2 processor with built-in AI processing. In addition to handling the greater amount of sensor data, it enables more advanced subject recognition and automated shooting assistance.


What this means in practice


The FX5 is the preferred choice for filmmakers wanting more resolution and a faster sensor readout. If your final delivery format is mainly 4K and you don’t require additional reframing flexibility, the FX3 is still an option to consider. 

The FX5 Adds Full-Frame Open Gate Recording


Open Gate recording is one of the most important differences between the FX5 and FX3.

Open Gate utilizes the entire 3:2 area of the FX5’s sensor, instead of just recording a standard 16:9 portion of the sensor.

This stores extra picture information above and below the regular widescreen frame. 

The extra room allows editors to create multiple deliverables from a single recording:

  • 16:9 videos for YouTube

  • 9:16 videos for Shorts, Reels, and TikTok

  • Square social-media content

  • Wider cinematic compositions

  • Anamorphic deliverables

  • Reframed or digitally stabilized shots

The FX3 does not offer full-sensor Open Gate recording. It captures conventional widescreen video formats, meaning vertical or square versions normally require a more significant crop. 

At launch, the FX5 records 5K footage at up to 60 fps. Open Gate recording is initially available only when recording in Sony’s X-OCN format. Sony plans to add 5K 3:2 X-OCN recording at up to 120 fps through a future firmware update.


What this means in practice


Open Gate will be especially useful for filmmakers who typically produce horizontal and vertical content from the same production. It can eliminate the need to record separate takes for YouTube, Instagram and other platforms. 

For creators who only deliver traditional 16:9 videos, the FX3’s simpler workflow can be enough.

The FX5 Records X-OCN RAW Internally


The Sony FX5 can record internally in 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW, meaning you don’t need an external recorder to get RAW files.

Sony provides three internal X-OCN options:

  • X-OCN LT: The least compressed option of the three, designed to prioritize image information.

  • X-OCN C1: A more compressed option that balances image quality and storage requirements.

  • X-OCN C2: The most storage-efficient option for longer recording times and more manageable files.

The internal RAW recording gives filmmakers greater control over exposure, color, highlight recovery, shadow detail and processing in post. It also lets you shoot RAW footage while keeping your camera rig relatively compact. 

The FX3 can output a 16-bit RAW signal via its full-size HDMI port, but recording that signal requires a compatible external recorder. It doesn’t record RAW internally. 

There are practical compromises. X-OCN recording produces more demanding files and you may need fast CFexpress Type A cards, additional archive storage, and a more powerful editing system. 


What this means in practice


The FX5 offers a more production-friendly RAW workflow, as the footage is recorded directly inside the camera. 

For filmmakers who want smaller XAVC files, but don’t need the flexibility of RAW on every project, the FX3 is easier to manage.

The FX5 Adds a Third Base ISO


The Sony FX3 offers two base ISO settings in Cine EI mode: ISO 800 and ISO 12,800.

The FX5 adds a third base sensitivity:

  • ISO 800: Bright exteriors, studios, and controlled lighting

  • ISO 4000: Dim interiors, evening scenes, and mixed-light environments

  • ISO 12,800: Night filming and very low-light conditions

Sony offers three basic settings for the FX5: ISO 800, ISO 4000 and ISO 12,800. 

A base ISO is a sensitivity at which a sensor is designed to provide a good balance of dynamic range and noise performance. 

Add ISO 4000 for a handy mid-range option for FX5 users. The FX3 filmmaker often faces the choice of staying at ISO 800 and adding light or pushing all the way to ISO 12,800. 

ISO 4000 may be better for moderately dark venues, evening exteriors, restaurants, event spaces, and available-light documentary environments.


What this means in practice


The FX3 remains a great low-light camera. The FX5 doesn't replace that strength, it adds an additional sensitivity option between the FX3's two established base settings. 

 

That middle setting might make it easier to make exposure decisions if lighting conditions change quickly. 

Dual Gain Shooting Comes to the FX5


Dual Gain Shooting is separate from the FX5’s three base ISO settings.

The base ISO system lets the operator choose the most appropriate sensitivity for the lighting conditions. The goal of Dual Gain Shooting is to increase the dynamic range and decrease noise, while preserving more detail in the shadows. 

The feature increases shadow detail and creates more natural and seamless tonal progression, giving filmmakers more room for color grading, Sony said. It is debuting in Sony’s Cinema Line FX camera series with the FX5, and is not available on the FX3. 

This could be especially useful for scenes with both bright highlights and deep shadows, such as:

  • Interiors with bright windows

  • Night scenes containing practical lights

  • Backlit interviews

  • High-contrast documentary environments

  • Exterior scenes during sunrise or sunset

Dual Gain Shooting does have recording limitations. Sony states that it supports frame rates up to 30p when recording full-frame 5K in 3:2 and up to 60p when recording full-frame 5K in 16:9 or 17:9.


What this means in practice


Dual Gain Shooting is aimed at situations where maintaining shadow detail and smooth tonal transitions is more important than using the camera’s highest frame rates. 

Another feature that brings the FX5 more in line with a dedicated cinema-production tool, while the FX3 maintains a more straightforward recording workflow. 

Updated Cosmetics and a New Battery System


The FX5 is indeed part of the same compact Cinema Line family as the FX3, but there are several physical and operational changes that Sony has made. 

The FX5 body is about 5.25 by 3.13 by 3.5 inches and weighs around 1.42 pounds without a battery or memory card. The FX3 measures about 5.11 × 3.06 × 3.33 inches and weighs about 1.39 pounds (body only). So the FX5 is a little larger and heavier, but not by much.

The FX5 also adds:

  • A larger 3.5-inch multi-angle monitor

  • A CineAlta-inspired multifunction control dial

  • The BIG6 home screen

  • More prominent front and rear tally lights

  • Revised movie-focused controls

  • A connection for Sony’s optional OLED viewfinder

The FX3 uses a smaller 3.0-inch monitor and maintains a simpler mirrorless-style control layout.

A new NP-SA100 battery

The FX5 doesn’t use the NP-FZ100 battery used by the FX3. Instead, Sony’s NP-SA100, a 2,670 mAh battery designed with the FX5’s power needs in mind. 

Sony rates the FX5 for about 105 minutes of normal recording or 170 minutes of continuous recording. The FX3 is rated for around 95 minutes of typical recording or 135 minutes of continuous recording. 

The new battery provides around 20.9 Wh of capacity, compared to the FX3’s NP-FZ100’s 16.4 Wh. 

For existing FX3 owners the different battery system is an important buying consideration. Upgrading to the FX5 might mean shelling out for a few more NP-SA100 batteries and the right charging setup instead of having a stockpile of NP-FZ100s already on hand.


What this means in practice


The FX5 is about the same size as the FX3, but with a larger screen, redesigned controls, more monitoring options and a bigger battery, it’s better suited to longer, more complex productions. 

The FX3 still has the edge for filmmakers who want to share batteries and accessories with other Sony cameras using the established NP-FZ100 system.

Final Verdict: Is the Sony FX5 a Worthwhile Upgrade?


The FX5 is not just an FX3 with a bigger model number. 

Its new 5K stacked sensor has increased resolution and a faster readout. Open Gate makes it simple to generate multiple deliverables from one recording. Internal X-OCN RAW gives you a more flexible post-production workflow without the need for an external recorder. 

The third base ISO provides filmmakers with another practical way to adjust light levels, while Dual Gain Shooting is designed to retain more shadow information in high-contrast scenes. 

Even the physical changes count. With the larger monitor, revised controls, improved interface, and higher capacity battery, the FX5 feels more like a compact professional cinema camera.

If you’re a filmmaker who already shoots mostly in 4K, Who already has smaller, more manageable files, Who already owns NP-FZ100 batteries, And who doesn’t need Open Gate or internal RAW, the FX3 is still a solid option. 

The FX5 is best when its advanced recording capabilities will provide a quantifiable advantage to production or post-production.
